Congress Proposes Deep Health Care Cuts — But They’re Facing Pushback
Congressional leaders recently unveiled a controversial budget resolution that would cut $880 billion, taking health care away from millions of Americans.
The proposal is devastating. Most of the cuts would target Medicaid, the health insurance program serving low-income children, seniors, people with disabilities, and pregnant women. These massive cuts would make our health care problems worse by sharply increasing costs, medical debt, and financial insecurity for families. The sheer size of federal Medicaid cuts will ripple across our health care system. States will lose vital funding that covers health care services like doctor and specialist visits; mental health services; long-term care and nursing home care; and hospital care, particularly in rural areas.
The good news is that we have a shot at stopping these cuts.
Medicaid is strongly supported by American voters, including 90% of Democrats and 75% of Republicans in a recent poll. It’s clear that voters do not want to cut health care for kids, seniors in nursing homes, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
Congressional leaders have a very narrow majority for passing the cuts in the House. They can't spare any votes, but a few members of Congress are starting to raise real concerns about voting for Medicaid cuts.
In fact, two GOP members of Congress from Texas just wrote to House Speaker Mike Johnson to express their concerns about proposed cuts to Medicaid and other programs. In their letter, Reps. Tony Gonzales and Monica De La Cruz warned, “Slashing Medicaid would have serious consequences, particularly in rural and predominantly Hispanic communities where hospitals and nursing homes are already struggling to keep their doors open."
We encourage Texans who live in their districts to thank Reps. Gonzales and De La Cruz for speaking out.
Rep. Tony Gonzales' district includes the west side of San Antonio, Del Rio, Fort Stockton, Uvalde, and other communities. You can reach his Capitol office at 202-225-4511.
Rep. Monica De La Cruz's district includes Seguin, Edinburg, McAllen, and other communities. The phone number for her Washington office is 202-225-9901.
Let’s keep raising our voices to stop these health care cuts!
