Alert: Congress about to vote on tax plan that now explicitly attacks health care!
It's official. The tax plan that's moving quickly through Congress is now an explicit threat to health care.
We need to swing into action, and we need to do it fast.
The tax legislation was already under fire for giving huge tax cuts to wealthy families and large corporations while increasing taxes on millions of middle class families.
Health care advocates have also warned that by raising the federal budget deficit by as much as $1.5 trillion over ten years, the plan will create pressure for future health care cuts and give Congressional leaders "an excuse" to slash Medicaid, Medicare, and ACA subsidies.
And we found out yesterday that the plan now directly attacks health care in two ways:
First, the Senate is expanding its tax legislation so that it repeals the requirement to have health insurance. Repealing the "individual mandate" would be a disaster for our health care. It would raise monthly premiums for health insurance by 10 percent and lead to 13 million more uninsured Americans.
Second, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office revealed that the tax bill could trigger certain automatic budget cuts through the "sequestration" process, resulting in a $25 billion annual cut to Medicare.
The House of Representatives could vote on the tax plan TODAY. The Senate is aiming to vote right after Thanksgiving break. And the votes are going to be close.
We encourage you to call your Senators and Representative TODAY at 202-224-3121 and urge them to oppose any tax plan that threatens our health care!
Once again, Representative Will Hurd — whose congressional district includes parts of San Antonio and El Paso plus Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Alpine, Fort Stockton, and other nearby communities -- may be a key vote. If you live in his district, be sure to give him a call!
Thank you for jumping into action to stop this latest attack against our health care!
