We Must Fight For Kids' Health Care NOW
Each day that passes, Congress gets closer to letting health care for 400,000 Texas kids fall off a cliff.
We now know that Texas may run out of funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in January if Congress doesn't get moving.
That would be terrible news for Texas kids who need to see a doctor for strep throat, kids with cancer, kids who need glasses to do their schoolwork, and many others.
Even a delay in getting the job done will trigger massive disruptions to Texas families. By December, Texas families could start receiving letters about the termination of coverage for their children. A delay in funding could also cause an 'account transfer' of CHIP children to the ACA Marketplace, only to have to move them back once CHIP is funded. In short, if CHIP is not renewed this month it could cause enormous levels of stress to families.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted last week to renew funding for CHIP. However, progress in the Senate is in doubt because the bill includes a partisan plan to pay for children's health care by slashing funding for disease prevention and other critical programs.
We urge you to call Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz at 202-224-3121 and encourage them to immediately renew CHIP funding for Texas kids.
Please encourage them to get back to the tradition of handling CHIP in bipartisan way rather than fighting over partisan plans for how to pay for it.
In addition to calling them, you can contact them on social media:
We also urge you to call Governor Greg Abbott at 512-463-2000 and ask him to encourage our Senators to get the job done quickly.
