We know you've already done so much to try to stop Congress from taking our health care. And we're so grateful for everything you've done. But now, as much as we hate to say it, it's time for all of us to dig a little bit deeper.
The U.S. Senate is likely to vote on the Graham-Cassidy Trumpcare bill on Wednesday, and it's going to be close.
We're very excited to see that Senator John McCain announced his opposition to the bill this afternoon. It's great news, and it shows we're making progress, but we can't let up now.
This bill would be a disaster for Texas and the rest of the country.
It ends protections for pre-existing conditions. It slashes health care funding, including Medicaid funding for Texas kids, seniors, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. Although Texas would receive a short-term funding bump by taking some of the Medicaid expansion funding away from low-income workers in other states, Texans would still lose an estimated $120 billion in health funding by 2036, as this CPPP blog explains. According to one analysis, 2.8 million Texans will lose health coverage by 2027 under this legislation. Here's additional information on the bill from CPPP, and statements from several Cover Texas Now members about why we oppose the bill.
Next week is the last chance for the Senate to pass the bill.
September 30th is the last date to pass health care repeal through the Senate this year without the filibuster rules applying. If it passes the Senate, it will go to the House for a final vote. That vote can take place after September 30th. The House can't change the bill.
Here are five ways you can help stop the bill.
1. Call your Senators TODAY at 202-224-3221 and urge them to oppose the bill.
Every Senator -- including those who are supportive of the bill -- need to hear from their constituents. We might not be able to convince Senators Cruz and Cornyn to vote no. But when Senators talk to each other over the next few days, we want them to say, "Wow, people really hate this bill!"
2. Work on the Senators who might be on the fence.
Key Senators include Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), and Shelley Moore Capito (R-West Virginia). Contact your friends and family in those states and urge them to call their Senators today. They can use the TrumpcareTen website for help, and you can use the website to sign up to call other constituents in those states.
3. Go to a health care rally.
You can show your opposition to Trumpcare at one of these upcoming events:
4. Start getting ready for the House vote -- and focus on Rep. Will Hurd.
If the bill passes the Senate, we'll have one final chance to stop it in the House. Job one in Texas is making sure that Congressman Hurd votes against it. He was the only Texas Republican to vote against Trumpcare when it passed the House earlier this year. His district includes parts of San Antonio and El Paso plus Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Alpine, Fort Stockton, and other nearby communities. If you're a constituent, call him at 202-225-4511 and urge him to vote no on Graham-Cassidy.
5. Spread the word on social media.
